Portable Scanning UnitWith the implementation of RFID comes the ability for libraries know exactly what items are in the library at any given time, and searches can be performed for missing items in a quick and simple process. Your first accurate stocktake will have been performed during the retrospective tagging process, but ongoing this task is done using the innovative Portable Scanning Unit.
Features
The Portable Scanning Unit features a housing box that contains a UMPC, RFID reader, a battery pack and a light weight hand-held wand. It also features a USB port, to enable the use of a keyboard or Flash memory. It is standalone and completely mobile. The housing box weighs about 890 grams and can be worn comfortably using the shoulder strap provided. The wand weighs about 190 grams and can be used for extended period of times without causing any fatigue.
The wand can be used to scan high and low shelves without excessive stretching or bending.
From a distance of approximately 50cm to 1m, the device is capable of reading 10,000-15,000 items an hour, allowing quicker and more comprehensive stock takes. The device emits a clicking sound to identify successful scanning, so the process is extremely accurate.
The unit can perform additional tasks such as searching for various lists e.g. weed lists, lost books etc. whilst doing a stock take. It is also possible to stock take a specific Dewey range and is any items outside that are discovered the unit will alarm. The Portable Scanning unit can also be used to conduct “security blasting”. When conversion is complete and it is time to install the RFID security the Portable Scanning Unit can be used to switch the security of all the items in the library to “on”; thus securing them. This process is known as data blasting and can be done at a speed of 20,000 books an hour.
