ISO28560 Conformity
  •  FE Technologies has now been independently verified by a third party to be ISO28560 compliant.

The ISO28560 that specifies the data model for RFID tags in libraries has now been both ratified by the International Organization for Standardization and published as a standard for Library RFID for Australian Libraries.  What does this mean for libraries and RFID vendors?

ISO28560 is now a published standard

In March 2011 the ISO28560 that specifies the data model for RFID tags in libraries was both ratified by the International Organization for Standardization and published as a standard for Library RFID for Australian Libraries.

 FE Technologies is ISO28560 compliant

FE Technologies has now been independently verified by a third party to be ISO28560 compliant.  FE Technologies RFID tags and Library RFID equipment adheres to all guidelines for data elements contain on the tag, and all associated library functions including circulation functions, sorting functions, inventory functions and item security.  Each upgrade and enhancement to our RFID system is tested for conformance to SIO28560 using independant software.

 What is ISO28560?

 ISO 28560-1:2011 provides the framework to ensure interoperability between libraries in exchange of library items with RFID tags, the freedom of the library to acquire or renew equipment or library items from different vendors and interoperability of a single RFID application from the vendor's perspective.

 What does this mean for Australian libraries?

 ISO 28560-1:2011 specifies a set of data elements and general guidelines for implementation, to meet the needs for:

  • circulation of library items;
  • acquisition of library items;
  • inter-library loan processes;
  • data requirements of publishers, printers and other suppliers of library items;
  • inventory and stock checking of items.

ISO 28560-1:2011 gives guidelines for item security, profiles, privacy, implementation, migration, label design and location of the RFID label.

ISO 28560-1:2011 specifies the data model, system data elements and user data elements to be used in conjunction with ISO 28560-2, ISO 28560-3 and any future parts of ISO 28560. (ISO Website)

By ensuring their existing RFID-enabled collections conform to ISO28560, libraries can be confident in knowing their RIFD system is compatible with most Australian LMS vendors, most Australian library RFID vendors, along with book make ready companies, including publishers and printers, and other libraries, including libraries external to their won library groups.

Libraries who are currently in the purchasing phase of RFID migration, or are considering the purchase of an RFID system, should make sure the system is fully ISO 28560-compliant in order to allow their libraries to exploit the full benefits of the new standard, avoid having to re-encode their tags at a later stage and to remain open to expanding their collections, and RFID equipment without the restrictions imposed by a proprietary system.
