Fraser Coast gets smart with library returns system

Queensland’s Fraser Coast Regional Libraries is looking to improve returns efficiency with the introduction of the Smart Bin and Sort Assistant RFID system components.

Library manager Jo Parker said that a major factor in their decision to install a selection of Smart Library™ RFID system products at all branches was to gain efficiencies in the returns room, enabling staff to spend more time with patrons using the busy service.

“We have a separate returns room and the introduction of the Smart Bin and Sort Assistant means we will no longer need to staff it 24/7,” Jo Parker explained.

“It gives us a more reliable system that ensures patrons have their returns processed immediately so they can borrow straight away.”

Developed by Victorian RFID innovator FE Technologies, the RFID Sort Assistant works with the Smart Bin to deliver a bulk and accurate returns solution for libraries.

The Sort Assistant processes multiple items simultaneously regardless of the library management system’s standard returns rules. It checks the items into the LMS using SIP2 protocol, then manages the sorting process using a local database on the Sort Assistant.

Its graphical user interface makes sorting easy. Returned items are listed on a computer screen and colour coded to assign a destination for each. For example, items highlighted in green are to return to the library shelves while those coded red are to be placed on hold.

On hold and return to home library items also trigger an audible alert and the Sort Assistant features an integrated printer that automatically prints hold dockets for items on reserve.

The Smart Bin uses a sophisticated algorithm that enables it to read the RFID tags of many library items simultaneously.

Working together with the Sort Assistant, the Smart Bin automatically changes an item’s security status from off to on and takes the item off the patron’s file. It also keeps a local database of returned items, eliminating the need to access the LMS for each item. The device then conducts a final check to ensure a 100 per cent returns check in rate.

Other Smart Library components included in the Fraser Coast Regional Libraries RFID upgrade include three Self Loan Stations, two security gates, nine circulation assistants, a portable scanning unit and RFID tags for 238,489 library items
