RFID and Public Health

FE Technologies products are designed with both patron and library staff safety as top priorities.  Along with complying with relevant manual handling and accessability standards, FE Technologies products comply with standards set by the Australian Government body ARPANSA.  In particular the document publised in May 2002 titled 'Maximum Exposure Levels to RadioFrequency fields – 3kHz to 300GHz’.  www.arpansa.gov.au/pubs/rps/rps3.pdf

FE Technologies RFID equipment operates at a radio frequency of 13.56 MHz which falls between the AM radio band and VHF television.   The maximum amount of power generated by FE Technologies RFID equipment is 400% weaker than the level deemed safe for both occupational purposes and for the general public.

Further FE Technologies complies with this standard with respect to minimising unneccessary exposure to electromagnetic fields (Section 5.7 e) - all Self Loan Stations supplied by FE Technologies only switch on the RFID components when necessary, and switch them off again after each transaction is completed.

The levels set by this standard are as a result of the compilation of health data relating to the transmission of radio frequencies, and takes into consideration the health of staff who work near this type of equipment and the general public including children and pregnant women.
